About Equality North East
Based in Gateshead, Equality North East is an independent not-for-profit company that works across the whole of the North East region with the aim of ‘Leading the way to a fairer future for all by celebrating the value of Equality and Diversity through innovative training, support and networking opportunites’. The organisation was established in over ten years ago and has developed to be an important regional resource and the leading body for equality information, advice, guidance, training and support for individuals and organisations in all sectors.
We work to achieve to remove the barriers to employment and entry into employment facing minority and disadvantaged groups. We recognise that stereotyping and prejudice can be deeply entrenched and if we are to address inequality and discrimination we need to use many different approaches, from working with school children and disadvantaged groups to raise self esteem and aspirations, to providing training and support for employers to help remove discrimination in the workplace.
We also recognise that if we are to achieve equality we need a shared regional approach and we have ensured that we work with partners, representatives of all strands and sectors and agencies to achieve this.
The non-executive Board is made up of members from the public, private and voluntary sectors including organisations representing disadvantaged groups. David Barker MBE, Director of Adult Services Percy Hedley Foundation, is the Acting Chair.
As a partnership organisation we have access to a wide range of expertise in equality and diversity.
